Unit 52 is located in North Central New Mexico, with the northern border defined by the Colorado state line. This unit is part of the Carson National Forest and features diverse terrain, ranging from rolling hills and oak brush in the east to aspen groves and grassy meadows in the west. With its mix of landscapes, Unit 52 offers a variety of hunting opportunities for all types of hunters.

The unit is home to a wide range of wildlife, including elk, mule deer, turkey, bear, and antelope. Much of the water in the area is man-made, and while the unit has minimal private land, most of the land that does exist is open for hunting. Access to private land can be arranged through agreements with landowners or via the state’s E-Plus program.

Unit 52 also provides the opportunity for guaranteed elk and antelope hunts through the purchase of Landowner Tags. While it’s not typically considered a trophy unit, it can produce 280+ bull elk and 160-class mule deer. For antelope hunters, this unit is one of the best in the state, with some of the highest-quality trophies available. Overall, Unit 52 offers a variety of game, terrain, and hunt types, making it a favorite among both guides and clients.

Unit 51 lies in North Central New Mexico, bordering Unit 52 to the north, and is also part of the Carson National Forest. The unit’s diverse terrain, from juniper and piñon flats in the east to mixed conifer and aspen stands in the west, provides ideal habitat for a variety of wildlife. The area is rich with natural water sources and stunning canyons, making it a prime hunting location.

Although Unit 51 is not widely known as a trophy unit, it has begun to produce more and more high-quality animals in recent years. The unit contains minimal private land, and most of the private land that exists is accessible for hunting, either through agreements with landowners or the E-Plus program.

Unit 51 offers a range of hunts, including elk, mule deer, bear, and turkey. It also features options for combination hunts during both archery and rifle seasons. With the possibility of purchasing Landowner Tags for guaranteed elk hunts, Unit 51 is known for producing some of the best bull elk in the region. Unit 49 is situated in the North Central part of New Mexico and is recognized as a top-tier trophy unit. Unit 49 is best suited for hunters looking to pursue trophy elk, with select hunts offered during prime seasons to ensure the best opportunities. The unit also provides the chance to hunt trophy mule deer, with combination elk and mule deer hunts available during archery season.

Although it is known as a trophy unit, the terrain can be more challenging than other areas, but the rewards make it well worth the effort.
